Building a Good Relationship with Your Child’s Teacher

August 26, 2022

Teachers are some of the most influential people in your child’s life because your child spends a lot of time in the classroom each day. It is very important for parents and teachers to work together to create a good school experience so your child succeeds.

Teacher in Classroom

Teachers want parents to be involved in their child’s education and show an interest in what the child is learning in school. These tips can help you establish a positive relationship.

Good Communication

Communication between parents and teachers is key to building a good relationship. Ask questions early and often. Do not wait until an issue has become a problem. If you have concerns, make a list of items you want to discuss and schedule a time to meet with the teacher. Approach this meeting in a positive, non-threatening way. Always keep the focus of the meeting on your child and ask the teacher for suggestions on how to fix the problem. It’s also good to remember to never talk negatively about your child’s teacher in front of them. Demonstrating respect for a teacher sets a good example for your child.

Offer Praise & Appreciation

We all like to receive feedback when things are going well. Offer your child’s teacher a compliment when you are really happy about something they have done or simply say thank you to acknowledge the hard work and patience that goes into educating and caring for your child. For example, you could mention you like their teaching style or how a lesson they taught really resonated with your child.

Keep Teachers Informed

If your child is going through a difficult time or a transition, such as moving to a new home or welcoming a new baby into the family, let your child’s teacher know. This information can help your child’s teacher understand changes in your child’s classroom behavior and adjust expectations accordingly.

Attend Special Events

Make every effort you can to attend events and conferences at your child’s school. It is a good opportunity to get to know the teachers and staff better, learn more about your child’s classroom and feel that you are a part of the school community. It’s also a great way to meet other parents.

Remember, you and your child’s teacher have the common goal of making school a great experience. You are both working to ensure the academic development and progress of your child is as successful as it can be. Developing a good relationship with each other is key to making this happen.

At Les Petits Cherubs, we want parents, teachers and children to have the best school experience. To help foster these relationships, we regularly communicate with parents and host a variety of events throughout the school year. For more information, contact us.
